ThreeBond Sealants in Solar Panel Manufacturing

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Sealants and adhesives are critical in solar module production, ensuring panels are weatherproof, durable, and electrically safe. In PV modules, every solar panel sealant must bond dissimilar materials (glass, metal frames, encapsulants) while withstanding UV, moisture, and wide temperature swings. ThreeBond offers specialized products for key solar applications: for example, UV-curable acrylic resins (TB3035B/C, TB3118) for sealing liquid-electrolyte cells, silicone-based RTVs (e.g. TB1207F) for high-UV, high-heat sealing, SMP elastomeric adhesives (TB1530 series) for flexible bonding and potting, fast-curing urethanes (TB1539) for structural bonding, and two-part epoxies (TB2045B/2145B) for thermally conductive bonds.

This report reviews solar-specific requirements (UV stability, thermal cycling, moisture barrier, electrical insulation) and profiles ThreeBond solar panel sealant solutions that meet them . A comparison table contrasts ThreeBond solutions with generic silicones, polyurethanes, and epoxies. Finally, a decision-flow chart guides selection of the appropriate ThreeBond solar panel sealantor adhesive for each panel component.

Introduction: Sealant Role & Requirements in Solar Panels

Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules are exposed to harsh outdoor conditions for 25+ years. Their components (glass cover, encapsulant, cells, frame, backsheet, junction box, cables) all require high-performance solar panel sealant bonding. Sealants in modules must block moisture and gases, absorb mechanical stresses (wind, snow loads), and remain flexible under extreme thermal cycling. For example, IEC 61215 PV standards test modules from –40°C to +85°C.

In desert climates panels can reach 70–80°C, so high-T‑range (> +150°C) materials are needed. Similarly, panels see intense UV (UVB/UVA) and humidity – requiring UV-resistant, hydrophobic solar panel sealant. Because panels are electrically active, sealants often serve as electrical insulation around junction boxes and cables. They must also match or accommodate component CTEs (thermal expansion) to prevent delamination.

Key requirements for PV sealants include: adhesion to glass, aluminum frame, polymers (encapsulant/backsheet) and plastics without primers, flexibility/elongation (often >200% to survive module flexing), UV and weather stability (silicones excel here), and moisture resistance to protect cells. Silicone silicones and modified-polymer (SMP) adhesives are favored for UV/weatherability, while epoxies or filled urethanes are used where high strength or heat conduction is needed. This report highlights how ThreeBond’s solar panel sealant products meet these demands in solar panel assembly.

ThreeBond Sealant Solutions for Solar Manufacturing

UV-Curable Acrylate Sealants (DSSC Sealing)

For dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) and similar thin-film modules, ThreeBond offers UV-curing acrylic solar panel sealants. TB3035B is a one-component UV-curable resin formulated specifically for DSSC. It has very low permeability to moisture and excellent chemical resistance to electrolyte solvents (iodine-based). It is used as the main and end solar panel sealant: applied by screen-print or dispensing around the cell perimeter, then cured under UV light to encapsulate the liquid electrolyte.

ThreeBond has also developed TB3035C and TB3118, similar UV-curable sealants. For example, TB3118 is described as a UV-curing silicone-acrylate hybrid with low moisture permeability. These sealants bond strongly to glass and polymer substrates, preventing electrolyte leakage. (Use Case: DSSC lamination/seal; main and hole plug solar panel sealant for liquid-electrolyte PV cells.)

Moisture-Curing SMP Adhesives (TB1530 Series)

ThreeBond’s 1500-series are one-part elastic adhesives based on silane-modified polymers (MS polymers). TB1530 (and variants 1530B/C/D) is a white, fast-curing SMP adhesive. It cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture, forming a durable elastomer. TB1530 has excellent initial tack and high flexibility: tensile elongation ~280%.

It maintains flexibility from –40°C up to +120°C (continuous) (even +150°C peak). It bonds strongly to diverse materials: its shear adhesion to aluminum is ~6.6 MPa and to many plastics >3 MPa. TB1530 contains no volatile solvents and does not release siloxane gases, making it electronics-safe. Its cured dielectric properties are also excellent (volumetric resistivity ~5×10^10 Ω·m).

Practically, TB1530 can be used like a silicone sealant or potting compound. It is ideal for sealing module frames, laminating layers or potting junctions and wire harnesses where a flexible, weatherproof bond is needed. For example, it can bond glass-to-frame, frame-to-backsheet, or serve as a cable-gland sealant. Its high elongation and peel strength absorb vibration and thermal expansion without cracking. (Use Case: frame adhesion and sealing, edge/encapsulant bonding, flexible potting of electronics.)

Fast-Curing Urethane Adhesive (TB1539)

The TB1539 series is a plant-derived, one-component urethane adhesive designed for rapid cure. It uses a castor-oil-based prepolymer and cures in minutes under mild heat (~60°C). ThreeBond notes that TB1539 reaches full cure (~1 minute at 60 °C) and does not require long baking. The cured material remains elastic from –35°C to +100°C and absorbs shock/vibration well. Its elongation is about 120%, with good adhesion to metals, plastics and glass.

This makes TB1539 well-suited to structural bonding in PV assembly where fast cure is desirable (e.g. bonding bypass diodes, sensor modules, or small mounting hardware). It can be used as a special low-temp cure sealant or structural adhesive, for example fixing small pads or internal sensors during panel assembly. (Use Case: high-speed bonding/potting; attaching bypass diodes or junction-box components where a durable yet slightly flexible adhesive is needed.)

RTV Silicone Sealants (1200 Series)

Silicone sealants are standard in PV for their unmatched UV and high-temperature resistance. ThreeBond’s 1200-series offers many RTV silicones for industrial sealing. A key example is TB1207F, a one-component moisture-cure RTV silicone solar panel sealant. It provides “excellent heat resistance” and “excellent engine oil and coolant resistance”. TB1207F withstands –60°C up to +200°C continuously (no yellowing), and bonds well to glass, anodized aluminum, and coatings without primer.

Its cured silicone remains soft and elastic (high elongation) and resists UV aging. Such silicones are ideal for edge sealing of modules, frame gasketing, and junction-box sealing, where they protect edges against rain and high UV. The inert Si–O–Si backbone provides intrinsic electrical insulation as well. In effect, TB1200-series silicones serve as heavy-duty solar panel sealant options for PV modules.

Thermally Conductive Epoxy Adhesives (TB2045B/2145B)

For PV components that generate heat (e.g. bypass diodes, power boards), adhesives that conduct heat can improve reliability. ThreeBond’s 2045B/2145B is a two-part epoxy system developed for battery thermal management, which is equally useful for PV electronics. Upon mixing, it cures at room temperature (no oven needed) to a rigid bond. The cured resin has high thermal conductivity (~2.1 W/m·K), far above typical epoxies, so it effectively spreads heat away from components. It also exhibits strong adhesion to metals (steel, Al, Cu) and substrates.

Critically, TB2045B/2145B meets UL94 V-0 flammability, an advantage for safety in electrical assemblies. Thus, for bypass-diode attachment, inverter potting, or any high-power PV electronics, TB2045B/2145B will bond parts while conducting heat and preventing fire. (Use Case: bonding diodes/heatsinks and potting junction boxes where thermal dissipation is needed.)

Practical Selection Guidance

The optimal ThreeBond sealant depends on the PV sub-assembly:

  • Frame/Edge Seals: Where panels face UV and heat, silicone RTVs solar panel sealant (e.g. TB1207F) provide lasting weather sealing. For structural frame bonding under less severe conditions, a flexible SMP adhesive (TB1530) also works.
  • Junction Box & Cable Potting: These need moisture-proof, insulating fill. A high-elastomer SMP adhesive (TB1530) or RTV silicone can pot small boxes. For automated processes, a UV-curable solar panel sealant could be used for fast cure.
  • Bypass Diodes / Heat Pads: These require adhesives with good thermal transfer. The TB2045B/2145B epoxy is recommended due to its thermal conductivity and fire resistance. If some flexibility is allowed and only moderate heat must be tolerated, TB1530 (or TB1539 if heat cure is used) is an alternative.
  • General Bonding (panels, glass laminations): Although cell lamination uses encapsulant EVA films, ThreeBond adhesives can attach frames or mounting pads. SMP adhesive (TB1530) and fast urethane (TB1539) offer strong bonds with damping.
  • Emerging Modules (e.g. double-glass frameless): Structural silicones (ideally separately qualified for structural glazing) become critical. ThreeBond’s high-strength silicones can bond glass to glass or glass to metal across module edges.

Conclusion

Selecting the right solar panel sealant in solar module manufacturing is crucial for long-term reliability. ThreeBond’s diverse portfolio addresses PV needs: from UV-curable sealants that hermetically seal liquid-electrolyte cells【4†L9009-L9012】, to silicone and SMP adhesives that safeguard module edges and frames against UV, moisture and thermal cycling, to thermally conductive epoxies that bond hot electronics while dissipating heat. Each ThreeBond product is backed by technical datasheets (cited above) confirming key properties (temperature range, elongation, dielectric strength, etc.). In practice, PV manufacturers can use the guidelines and comparison table above to match a ThreeBond sealant to each component’s demands. By leveraging ThreeBond’s adhesives and sealants, solar manufacturers gain actionable solutions that enhance module durability, electrical safety, and assembly efficiency.
